THE PREPARATION OF A VOLATILE POLONIUM FLUORIDE

The formation of PoF₆ with subsequent storage as vapor in the presence of excess F was attempted. Po²⁰⁸ was deposited on Pt gage, the gage placed in a Ni tube, and F gas passed through the tube. The change in fast neutron distributions resulting from the formation and decomposition of the volatile PoF₆ was studied. Results indicated that a volatile Po compound was formed which decomposed due to chemical and radioactive decomposition. (M.C.G.)
