Magnetic-anneal-induced uniaxial anisotropy in TbFe$sub 2$

Low-temperature magnetic measurements were made on polycrystalline samples of TbFe$sub 2$. Hysteresis curves taken after the material was cooled to temperatures below 80K in the presence of a field were found to be oddly distorted when the measuring field direction and the annealing field direction differed. This behavior can qualitatively be explained in terms of a model based on the high cubic anisotropy and magnetostriction existing in this material, plus an added, anneal-induced uniaxial anisotropy. Activation energy studies at the annealing temperature indicate that dislocations are involved in the annealing process. (auth)
