NUCLEAR SUPERHEAT PROJECT. Sixteenth Quarterly Report, May-July 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4151316

The ESH-1.1 fuel assembly was replaced in VDWR for continued irradiation. Design and development work is proceeding on EVESR prototype elements to be installed in ESH-3. Material specifications for nuclear quality Inconel 600, Incoloy 800, and 300 series stainless steel were formulated and issued. The fabrication techniques and properties for Incoloy are described. Testing of cladding materials in the CL-1 and -4 loops is evaluated. The E-SADE condenser was replaced and loop operation resumed with ESH-1.1. Installation and checkout of the Mixed Spectrum Critical Assembly (MSCA) is approximately 80% complete. A test program is established for loading the core to the design power split which will extend over four months. Physics calculations of an MSSR core with and without a small amount of moderator indicate the degraded spectrum obtained with 1.8 vol% polyethylene results in an increase in Doppler coefficient by a factor of two. The large power spike at the outer endge of the fast core cand be reduced by increasing the fast buffer thickness with little change in the power split. (N.W.R.)
