NUCLEAR SUPERHEAT PROJECT TWELFTH QUARTERLY REPORT, APRIL-JUNE 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4648073

The design study of a 800 Mw(e) boiling water-separate superheat reactor plant is summarized. The reactor is a single cycle, forced circulation with internal steam separators, 1075 psi, 1200 Mw(t). The superheat core is in a separate pressure vessel. It is a single pass with rod fuel, 985 psi, 950 deg F exit steam temperature. The fabrication of ESH-1 is complete. The design of ESH- 2 is completed and fubrication has begun. The elements are to be tested with different claddings. An evaluation is made of the 300 series stainless steels as cladding material for fuel elements. With respect to coolant testing of claddings, Inconel's performance is greatly superior to types 304 and 347 stainless steels. Observations on the flow in the full-circle radialvane separator were made in the air-water test loop at flow rates about equivalent to those in the 300 Mw(e) separate superheat reactor. Excessive droplet formation outside the vanes was observed. SH-4D was irradiated in the VBWR. The design data for all SADE fuel elements are summarized. Installation of the E-SADE loop was completed and a non-fueled checkout of the system was started. The cross section of the 75 Mw(e) prototype MSSR has had its fast core changed from square to round and the fuel changed from square to hexagonal. The design and fabrication effort for the Mixed Spectrum Superheat Critical Experiment (MSSCE) is proceeding on schedule. (N.W.R.)
