IMPROVEMENTS IN NUCLEAR FUEL ELEMENTS AND MANUFACTURING METHOD

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4148768
A fuel element is described in which an elongated container is provided for the fuel material with end closures integrally secured and sealed at either end of the container. At least one of the end closures contains a cavity that opens to the interior of the container and contains a resilient, porous, fluid- permeable compact. An example is given for a Zircaloy-clad fuel element of UO/ sub 2/ powder with Zircaloy end plug tube bonding by hot swaging. Data are presented for effects on bonding at swaging temperatures of 1500 to 2200 deg F. (R.E.U.)
