SPECIFICATIONS FOR SWAGE-COMPACTED, MIXED OXIDE (UO$sub 2$-PuO$sub 2$) FUEL ELEMENTS FOR THE PRTR(MARK I-M)

Plutonium-containing, 19-rod cluster fuel elements have been fabricated for the Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor (PRTR) by swage compacting loose, mixed oxide powders in Zircaloy cladding. Some elements contain physical mixtures of UO/sub 2/ and PuO/sub 2/ while others contain high energy rate, pneumatic- mechanical impaction densified fuel particles (Nupac), in which PuO/sub 2/ is dispersed throughout UO/sub 2/. The swage compacted fuel rods feature swageable end caps which minimize the possibility of contamination spread during processing. Specifications governing the fabrication of these fuel elements were developed in detail during development of the fabrication process. (auth)
