NUCLEAR ELECTRIC MONOPOLE TRANSITIONS IN O$sup 16$, Ca$sup 40$, Ge$sup 72$ AND Zr$sup 90$ (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4148084
A study was made of electric monopole transitions from the O/sup +/ first excited states of certain nuclei. A search for 6.05 Mev O/sup 16/ EO conversion electrons gave an upper limit of 1 x 10/sup -4/ for the ratio of the probability for conversion electrons to that of pair emission. Ca/sup 40/ EO conversion electrons were observed and a ratio of W conversion/W pair = (6.94 approximately 0.20) x 10/sup -3/ was obtained, which agreed very well with theoretical prediction. The momentum distributions of both components of pairs from the first excited state were observed and agreed with the theoretical predictions. An upper limit of 6 x 10/sup -3/ was placed on the ratio of double gamma emission to pair emission. The energy of the first excited state was found to be 3.353 approximately 0.003 Mev by maeasurement of the conversion electron energy. An excitation function for population of the first excited state of Ge/ sup 72/ by inelastic scattering of protons was observed between 2.3 ard 6.2 Mev proton bombarding energy. The K and L + M EO conversion electrons were resolved and the ratio W/sub K//W/sub L+M/ = 8.70 approximately 0.06 was obtained. The energy of the first excited state was found to be 0.690 approximately 0.001 Mev. An excitation function for population of the first excited state of Zr/sup 90/ by inelastic scattering of protons was obtained between 3.35 and 6.5 Mev proton bombarding energy. The momentum distributions of both components of pairs were observed and agreed with the theoretical predictions energy of the first excited state was measured as 1.762 approximately 0.002 Mev. 2.36 approximately 0.05 was obtained for the ratio W conversion/W pair. The K and L + M conversion electrons were resolved and the ratio W/sub K//W/sub L+M/ =7.06 approximately 0- 08 was obtained. (auth)
