EVIDENCE AGAINST THE EXISTENCE OF THE B$sup 0$ MESON

A report is given of an attempt to observe the production of a B/sup o/ meson in the reaction gamma + p yields B/sup o/ + p. Protons at a given angle and momentum were detected in coincidence with a photon on the opposite side of the beam. The photon spectrometer was located at such an angle that the maximum energy of the photons resulting from the decay of singly produced pi /sup o/ mesons was lower than the maximum energy of those from the B/sup o/ mesons produced by gamma + p yields B/sup o/ + p, which decayed acconding to B/sup o/ yields pi /sup o/ + gamma . This tec hnique is limited to B/sup o/ mesons of mass >3000 Mev. This experiment becomes insensitive for B/sup o/ masses below 300 Mev. The average cross sections for the photoproduction of B/sup o/ mesons for various mass values are tabulated. (B.O.G.)
