CESIUM-137 LEVELS IN HUMAN BODY, DECEMBER 1961-NOVEMBER 1962

Post-mortem samples of human breast muscles collected in Tokyo from December 1961 to November 1962 were analyzed for cesium-137 and potassium. The highest monthly averages of cesium-137 in human muscle were 0.201 and 0.158 mu mu C/g in March and October 1962, as compared with the mean levels of 0.09-0.11 mu mu C/g. This trend probably reflects the increase of cesium-137 in fallout that resulted from the series of nuclear explosions by the U.S.S.R. in the autumn of 1961. The average estimates of total body burden were 4.3-4.8 m mu C for the period. (Public Health Eng. Abstr., 43: No. 11, 1983)
