Lifetimes of the 6$sub 1$$sup +$ states in $sup 42$Ti and $sup 46$Ca and E2 effective charges in (1f$sub 7$$/$$sub 2$)/sup plus-or-minus//sup 2/ nuclei

The mean lifetimes of the 6$sup +$$sub 1$ states in $sup 42$Ti at 3041 keV and $sup 46$Ca at 2974 keV have been measured with the pulsed beam method to be tau = 5 plus-or-minus 2 ns and 15.2 plus-or-minus 0.8 ns, respectively. The states were populated via the reactions $sup 40$Ca($sup 3$He,n)$sup 42$Ti at E$sub 3$He=12 MeV and $sup 48$Ca($alpha$$,$$alpha$2n)$sup 46$Ca at E/sub alpha/=50 MeV. The deduced B (E2, 6$sup +$$Yields$$4$$sup +$) values result in proton and neutron effective charges which are in good agreement with other (1f$sub 7$$/$$sub 2$)/sup plus-or-minus//sup 2/ nuclei. However, the present lifetime result for $sup 42$Ti is in disagreement with another measurement for this nucleus. A comparison of E2 effective charges extracted from all presently available B (E2) data on the 6$sup +$$Yields$$4$$sup +$$Yields$$2$$sup +$$Yields$$0$$sup +$ transitions in (1f$sub 7$$/$$sub 2$)/sup plus-or-minus//sup 2/ nuclei is presented.
