A means of discharging fuel elements from sodiumcooled graphite- moderated reactors is described in which the discharge machine, which is movable over the top face of the reactor and which forms part of the radiation shielding, has a channel for transferring fuel elements to a remote point below the reactor without opening the shielding. One particular reactor configuration provided with such a discharging means is given together with a discussion of its operation. (D.L.C.)
