FUEL ELEMENT DISCHARGE SYSTEMS FOR NUCLEAR REACTOR
A system is described for discharging fuel elements from vertically oriented nuclear reactors by access from the top of the reactor. The upper face of the reactor core assembly is separated from the top shield structure by a space in which the fuel channels terminate. A fuel element discharge channel extends from the same space to a discharge point below the shield structure. A portion of the top shield structure consists of a rotatable wheel upon which a fuel element manipulating machine is mounted eccentrically in such a manner' that it can move between the terminal ends of the fuel channels and the fuel element discharge channel. Fuel elements can thus be removed from the reactor without penetrating the shielding above the reactor. (A.G.W.)
