ZIRCONIUM COMPLEXES IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION. III. ESTIMATION OF FORMATION CONSTANTS

Data obtained from potentiometric titration of the zirconium -- ethylenediaminetetraacetate 1: 1 (Zr --EDTA 1: 1) chelate at different concentrations were used to estimate the dimerization constant, K/sub D/, and hydrolysis constant, K, of the monomeric chelate. Potentiometric data were also used to determine equilibrium constants for the reaction of disodium 1,2- dihydroxybenzene-3,5-disulfonate (Tiron) with the Zr--EDTA 1: 1 chelate to form the Zr-EDTA--Tiron 1 1: 1 chelate. Spectrophotometric measurements were used to estimate the formation constant of the zirconium-Tiron 1: 1 and zirconium -- nitrilotriacetate 1: 1 chelates and to set limits on the Zr-EDTA 1: 1 chelate formation constant. Some data are reported for the corresponding hafnium chelate systems. (auth)
