Investigations of niobium(IV) solutions in ethyl alcohol led to the preparation of two diamagnetic compounds, d Nb(OC2H5)4. The former is prepared by the addition of pyridine to niobium(IV) chloride solutions in ethyl alcohol. The structure of the dimer is thought to involve chloride bridging on the basis of its chemical properties. Nb(OC2H5)4 is prepared by the reaction of NaOC2H5 with STANbCl(OC2H5 )3(C5H5)2. Both compounds are readily converted to (C5H6N)2STANb(OC2H5) Cl5.
