TOTAL GAMMA ABSORPTION IN C$sup 12$, N$sup 14$, O$sup 16$, AND AL$sup 27$ AT 20 MEV. Technical Report No. 5

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4144021
Total gamma absorption cross sections of C/sup 12/ from 20.0 to 21.15 Mev, and of N/sup 14/, O/sup 16/, and Al/sup 27/ from 20.0 to 20.5 Mev, were measured using monochromatic gamma rays. A direct absorption technique was used in which samples were placed between the target of an electrostatic generator, and large sodium-iodide scintillation detectors. Monochromatic photons from the T/sup 3/(p, gamma )He/sup 4/ reaction were varied in energy by changing the energy of the incident protons. The C/sup 12/ cross-section showed pronounced structure with resonances resolved at 20.15, 20.46, and 20.92 Mev, with integrated cross sections of showed a sharply rising cross section suggesting a strong resonance peaked above about 20.5 Mev. The crossections of N/sup 14/ and Al/sup 27/ were smooth over the energy interval investigated. (auth)
