THE EFFECT OF OXYGEN PRESSURE ON THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OXIDATION OF TANTALUM

Journal Article · · J. Less-Common Metals
The pressure dependence of the linear rate constant for the oxidation of tantalum was investigated at 600 to 900 deg C and 1 to 760 mm Hg. The results confirm that the controlling step is preceded by an equilibrium adsorption process, as suggested by Fassell et al., and indicate that at low pressures the rate-controlling step depends on the square root of the oxygen pressure. At lower temperatures and higher pressures another process controls the rate. which varies linearly with pressure. Possible reaction mechanisms are proposed to account for the observations. (auth)
