IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO URANIUM ALLOYS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4141855
A method is given for preparing U-Mo alloys of 1 to 3% Mo content, which are suitable for use as a fuel in reactors. The method comprises fusing the metals together under vacuum in a graphite crucible covered with an alumina or calcium zirconate cement, pouring the molten alloy into molds to produce bars or tubes, and cooling the cast alloy to the ambient temperature at a rate of 10 to 80 deg C/minute. The resulting microstructure is very fine, with a grain size of 20 to 80 mu , and the properties are superior to these of U. Moreover, since the Mo content is low, natural U may be used. (D.L.C.)
