IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO URANIUM-MOLYBDENUM ALLOYS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4114953
A process for preparing a Mo--U alloy that has better properties than uranium itself for use as a fuel in a nuclear reactor is described. The two metals are melted under vacuum in a graphite crucible covered with a reducing cement. The product is maintained in a molten state and poured into molds in the form of bars or tubes. These are subjected to heat treatment in salt baths followed by a stepped tempering to produce a microstracture with grains of 60to 80 mu . The Mo-U alloy is characterized by a Mo content of between 0.3 and 0.6% by weight. (M.C.G.)
