IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO IRRADIATION OF STARCH

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4141536
The irradiation of starch to 10 to 200 x 10/sup 6/ r in the presence of small amounts of H/sub 2/O and V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ catalyst improves its properties. In an example 100 g of cornstarch. 100 cc H/sub 2/O, and 1/2 g V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ are irradiated to 10/sup 8/ r. The starch is rendered soluble. The pasto centrifuged out dries to a finish desirable in papers and fabrics. The starch product of the irradiation-catalysis process is useful in the food, textile, paper, mining, and tanning industries. (T.R.H.)
