The improvement of alloying and bonding in metals by irradiation is described. In an example 50 g ZrO/sub 3/ and 50 g PbO/sub 3/ are suspended in 100 g H/sub 2/O and irradiated to 10/sup 8/ r/g. On heating to 150 to 200 deg C, a heterogeneous equilibrium was established and Zr/sub 5/Pb/sub 3/ was formed. In another example Sudbury Basin Ore was suspended in water and irradiated, centrifuged, and dried. Mixture with stearic acid and paraffin followed by compression to 25,000 lb and heating at 2400 deg C in a Johnson crucible produced a hard, corrosion-resistant body. (T.R.H.)
