BASIC CHLORIDES AND HYDROXIDES OF YTTRIUM AND LANTHANUM (in Russian)

A potentiometric method was used to estublish the composition and activity prcduct of the basic saits of Y and La. A NaOH solution was added to a rare earth salt solution to give partial precipitation. Measurements were carried out 40 and 166 days later. Studies were also made on freshly prepared precipitates. The studies show that La(OH)/sub 2/CI is formed at first and is converted to a salt of the composition La(OH)/sub 2/.5Cl/sub 0.5/ after 65 days. The negative log of the activity prcduct was 15.36 for Im(OH)/sub 2/CI and 18.37 for Im(OH)/sub 2.5/Cl/sub 0.5/. In the corresponding heterogenous yttrium system part of the freshly prepared precipitate has the composition Y(OH)/sub 1.75/Cl/ sub 1.25/ and the other part is Y(OH)/sub 3/. The composition is Y(OH)/sub 2.5/ CI/sub 0.5/ after 100 days aging.The negative log of the activity prcduct was found to have a value of 14.61 to 15.91 for Y(OHl/sub 1.75/Cl/sub 1.25/, 23.17 for Y(OH)/sub 3/ and 22.46 for Y(OH)/sub 2.5/CI/sub 0.5/.
