IDENTIFICATION OF Xe$sup 142$ AND MEASUREMENT OF ITS CUMULATIVE YELD FROM THERMAL-NEUTRON FISSION OF U$sup 23$$sup 5$

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. & Nuclear Chem.
Xe/sup 142/ was identified as a product of the thermal-neutron fission of U/sup 235/ by determination of 85 min La/sup 142/ in the active deposit of highly emanating uranyl stearate. The halflife of Xe/sup 142/ is approximately 1.5 sec. and its cumulative yield in fission is 0.059 of the total 142-chain yield. The cumulative yield of Xe/sup 141/ was redetermined to be 0.205 of the 141-chain yield, in agreement with the previously reported value of 0.21 plus or minus 0.02. The Xe/sup 142/ yield is compared with values predicted by various postulates of nuclear charge distribution in fission. The mass number of the 85 min La was proven to be 142 by its formation from the Ce/sup 142/-La/sup 142/ reaction. (auth)
