A RADIOMETRIC METHOD FOR MEASURING THE THICKNESS OF COATINGS (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Zavodskaya Lab.
OSTI ID:4140402
Back-scattering of beta radiation was used for determining the thickness of coatings on metals. By losing some of their energy, the electrons shift the maximum of the radiation toward the lower energy range compared to the primary radiation. This value of the new maximum E'/sub max/ is determined by the empirical equation E'/sub max/=0/12 E/sub m/. Z/sup 0.38/, where E/sub m/ designates the energy maximum of the primary radiation and Z the atomic number of the scattering element. A scintillation counter and an amplitude discriminator were used for the measurements, in which the thickness of ceramic coatings on steel, molybdenum and titanium was determined. The radiation sources, such as Tl/ sup 204/, P/sup 32/, Y/sup 90/ (in equilibrium with Sr/sup 90/), Pr/sup 14 4/ (in equilibrium with Ce/sup 144/), and Rh/sup 106/ (in equilibrium with Ru/sup 106/) must be chosen according to the density range of the coating to be measured.
