THE USE OF ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRA-ACETIC ACID IN THE SEPARATION OF RADIOACTIVE BARIUM AND STRONTIUM

(1960) July. A method for the separation of radioactive barium and strontium was developed for application to the precipitate of mixed nitrates customarily obtained with 75% HNO/sub 3/. The difference between the soluhility products of barium and strontium chromates was reinforced by the different stabilities of the complexes formed by these elements with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). A high yield of barium chromate, almost free from strontium, was obtained by adding an excess of chromate ions to an ammoniacal solution of the complexes of the metals with EDTA. Strontium was then recovered as sulfate by displacement with copper. (M.C.G.)
