RAPID ANALYSIS OF ALKALINE EARTHS. I. A NEW SEPARATION METHOD OF STRONTIUM FROM CALCIUM BY USE OF DIHYDROXYETHYLGLYCINE AS A MASKING REAGENT

Journal Article · · Nippon Kagaku Zasshi (Japan) Formerly Nippon Kagaku Kaishi (1921- 47) Merged with Kogyo Kagaku Zasshi to form Nippon Kagaku Kaishi
Dihydroxyethylglycine forms weak complexes with alkaline earths in alkaline medium. Its strontium complex has lower stability than calcium complex, hence if ammonium sulfate is added to an ammoniacal solution containing strontium and calcium complexes, only strontium sulfate precipitates by heating. Alcohol is also added for completion of the precipitation. The solution is ice-cooled for 1 hr, then centnifuged. Washed precipitate is dissolved with excess of disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic solution, and the strontium can be determined by back-titration with magnesium solution at pH 10 by the usual way. By the method, many samples containing less than 0.2 m mole of strontium and calcium in 2 ml can be analyzed much more rapidly than by ordinary extraction method. Less than 0.2 m mole of magnesium and potassium, 1 m mole of sodium, 3 m mole of ammonium, and 1 m mole of anions such as nitrate, perchlorate, chloride, bromide, iodide, thiocyanate, and acetate do not interfere; most of the anions which precipitate with calcium interfere.
