Elastic neutron and thermal diffuse x-ray scattering in the high temperature region of sodium

Results on elastic neutron scattering around the [200] Bragg peak and on thermal diffuse x-ray scattering around the [110] reciprocal lattice vector of sodium are reported. The data are discussed in terms of the defect structure and a possible lattice instability at the melting point. In addition some remarks are made concerning the special nature of the melting transition. (FR)
