The magnetic and quadrupole moments in deformed nuclei with strong collective nucleon interaction were calculated to verify the accuracy of data obtained with the statistical nuclear model. Data for odd-neutron and odd-proton Sr, Zr, Mo, Ba, Nd, Hg, Pb, Co, Cu, In, Sb, Tl, and Bi, obtained by a single shell model and the statistical model, show that the statistical model explains better the magnetic and quadrupole moment data for weakly deformed nuclei. Theoretical magnitudes for magnetic moments found by the statistical model are in good agreement with experimental values, with the exception of Nd/sup 143/, Hg/ sup 20/, and Bi/sup 209/. The first collective level of Pb/sup 208/ is not known and the selected hydrodynamic value hw = 1.3 Mev is obviously not correct. Thus the magnetic moment magnitude for Bi/sup 209/ is two-fold smaller. Nd/sup 143/ is found at the boundary of deformed nuclei where the use of the model is not quite legitimate. For the quadrupole moments the agreement between theory and experiment is somewhat worse. (R.V.J.)
