SOLID SOLUTIONS OF URANIUM DIOXIDE IN ZIRCONIA WITH THE MONOCLINIC ZrO$sub 2$ (BADDELEYITE) STRUCTURE

X-ray powder-diffraction studies were made on solid solutions of UO/sub 2/ in ZrO/sub 2/ which have the monoclinic ZrO/sub 2/ (baddeleyite) structure. The unit cell dimensions of "Specpure" ZrO/sub 2/ and Zr/sub 0.95/U/sub 0.05/O/ sub 2/ respectively, were determined as: a = 5.142 plus or minus 0.005A, b = 5.203 plus or minus 0.005A, c = 5.325 plus or minus 0.005A, beta = 99.1 plus or minus 0.1 deg ; and a =5.180 plus or minus 0.005A, b =5.215 plus or minus 0.005A, c =5.344 plus or minus 0.005A, beta =99.2 plus or minus 0.1 . The solid solution Zr/sup 0.90/U/sup 0.10/O/sub 2/ transformed to a tetragonal structure between 800 and 1000 deg F. (auth)
