IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4139003

A unique fuel element for gas-cooled graphite-moderated reactors was designed using a single thin sheet of clad uranium rolled into a spiral, layers of which are held in position by brazcd spacer rods of inert material. The advantages of such a fuel element are easy fabrication and high heat-transfer rates. Typically, the sheet may be 0.022-in. thick, including the coating which may be 0.003-in. thick. This fuel-element design is used in reactors having spiral graphite elements to eliminate neutron streaming (see Patent Serial No. 842,330). (D.L.C.)
