Fluidized reactor reduction of UF$sub 6$ to UO$sub 2$

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4138911

A two stage fluid bed process for converting UF$sub 6$ to UO$sub 2$ is described. In the first stage UF$sub 6$ is converted, preferably in two separate fluid beds, to U$sub 3$$O$$sub 8$ by first forming UO$sub 2$$F$$sub 2$ solids and treating the UO$sub 2$$F$$sub 2$ with steam to produce U$sub 3$$O$$sub 8$. The U$sub 3$$O$$sub 8$ is reduced at relatively low temperatures i.e., at about 450$sup 0$C to about 500$sup 0$C., in a second stage to uranium dioxide. (auth)
