INFRARED ABSORPTION ANALYSIS OF URANYL FLUORIDE IN URANIUM(IV) FLUORIDE (QUANTITATIVE DETERMINATION IN THE SOLID PHASE)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4138550
A method is described for the direct infrared absorption determination of uranyl fluoride in uranium(IV) fluoride. The integrated absorption intensity of the uranyl ion in uranium(IV) fluoride wss measured from the recorded spectra. The potassium bromide sample preparation technique was used. A comparison was made between the values obtained by this method and those obtained by the exhaustive extraction of uranyl fluoride. The most favorable condition for the total extraction of uranyl fluoride from uranium(IV) fluoride is by the use of absolute methanol as a solvent. The infrared method shows that the total uranium(VI) content is production-grade uranium(IV) fluoride exists in part as an alcohol-soluble uranyl ion and in part as and alcohol-insoluble uranium(VI) compound.
