Being refractory and resistant when exposed to high current densities, thorium carbides are of great inierest for the electronics industry as cathode materials. The monocarbides and dicarbides found in the Th--C phase diagram were prepared by heating the stoichiometric mixtures of ThO/sub 2/ and C in a vacuum furnace at temperatures ranging from 1000 to 1900 deg C. The optimum temperature for the formation of both carbides was 1800 deg C under a vacuum of 2 to 3 x 10/ sup -2/ mm Hg. The carbides were found to be easily soluble in water, acids, and alkalis.
