CARBIDES OF THORIUM AND URANIUM IN BISMUTH. Report No. 13,312C

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4826332

Monocarbides and dicarbides of uranium and thorium were produced by arc melting techniques. The compounds were agitated with liquid bismuth at 500 deg C and the reaction products studied by metallographic and x-ray techniques. Uranium monocarbide and uranium dicarbide are stable in liquid bismuth but thorium monocarbide reacts with bismuth to form the more stable compound, thorium bismuthide. The results for thorium dicarbide in liquid bismuth are inconclusive as it has not yet been found possible to produce homogeneous thorium dicarbide by arc melting. (auth)
