GAMMA SPECTROMETRIC DETERMINATION OF HAFNIUM IN ZIRCONIUM (in Czech)

A method for determining Hf in Zr is described that utilizes radioactivation and spectrometric scintillation gamma analysis. The Hf concentration is determined from measurements of the photopeaks of the 229.5- and 136.2kev levels in the gamma spectra of Hf/sup 175/, Hf/sup 181/, and Zr/sup 95/ . From the Hf activity measured below the 22.5-kev level the pulses from Zr/sup 95/ + Nb/sup 95/ are subtracted, these being recorded simultaneously with the Hf/ sup 175/ and Hf/sup 181/ pulses. As a standard for the determination of Hf in Zr by this method it is necessary to simultaneously activate pure Zr and the unknown specimen under the same conditions, since data from pure Zr is needed for determination of the conversion constant. Development of this method for comparative determinations is described. For this purpose it is sufficient to compare a sample containing known Zr and Hf quantities with the activities of the unknown specimens, the conversion constant of Zr not being necessary. (BBB)
