THE MECHANISM OF SULFURIC ACID AND URANIUM EXTRACTION BY TERTIARY AMINES (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4138209

Results are reported of investigations concerning the extraction by tri- n-hexyl amine and tri-n-octyl amine, the first mostly used together with a salting-out agent. The mechanism of the reaction between amine and sulfuric acid depends strongly on the solvent used. When benzene was used, the law of mass action seemed to be followed. When kerosene was used, formation of micelles was probable. The uranium extraction depends on the sulfuric acid loading of the organic phase, and it is concluded that several complexes between amine sulfate and uranyl sulfate exist. A synopsis is given of literature on extraction. (auth)
