THE CHOICE OF DETECTORS IN THICKNESS MEASUREMENT OF RELATIVELY THICK MATERIALS (in German)

The stability of bremsstrahlung for measuring the thickness of materials such as those manufactured in cold rolling mills and the concept of sensitivity in such measurements are discussed. Experiments are reported on the use of scintillation counters with subsequent pulse-height analysis for technical measurements of thickness. Although the sensitivity P of such an arrangement appears to be greater, the arrangement does not meet the necessary requirements because of the large margin of error in measuring radiation intensity. The possibilities for improving the ionization-current yield of the ionization chamber for bremsstrahlung are also listed. The margin of error in measuring radiation intensity with such an ionization chamber is small enough to permit use of a measurement system with ionization ohamber although there is hardly any increase in sensitivity. With this system material thicknesses can be measured within the prescribed marrow tolerances with a sufficientiy short adjustment time. (auth)
