EFFECT OF X RADIATION ON THE PHENOMENON OF $sub 4$WATER SENSITIVITY$sub 4$ IN BARLEY (in French)

Seeds of Hordeum sativum Jess., a spring barley, were exposed to various x-ray doses. The seeds had a water concentration of 10.5% at the moment of irradiation. One batch of seeds was placed in germination immediately after irradiation, but the second batch was held over for 24 hrs before germination. Both batches were germinated in the presence of an excess of water. The results showed that the germination is stimulated by sufficiently high irradiation doses. The 24-hr storage modifies the germinating power of the grain. The inactivation of the -- SH group of a germination inhibitor and the modifications of the O/sub 2/ pressure in the grains seem to be the two most important factors in the germination of irradiated water-sensitive'' barley.(J.S.R.)
