RADIATION SHIELD FOR NUCLEAR REACTOR INSTALLATIONS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4134187
A nuclear reactor installation is described that comprises a pool having a bulge in its wall enclosing a semicylindrical cavity within the pool forming the working place of the reactor core. The bulge reaches into an adjacent irradiation chamber. A movable radiation shield is provided within the radiation chamber, this shield being adapted to be brought into the trajectory of radiation emitted by the reactor core in order to modify the intensity and nature of radiation serving for irradiation. This shield suitably has a semiannular cross section, such as to fit over the outer surface of the bulge, and is constituted of a material of a high atomic number to ensure a sufficient gamma-ray alteration. The shielding material may be disposed in the form of two plates with an interspace between them for the circulation of a cooling fluid. (IIB)
