SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE REGENERATION OF BONE TISSUE UNDER CONDITIONS OF PENETRATING RADIATION (in Russian)

Immediately after irradiation with an x-ray dose of 650 r the right tibia was subjected to fracture in a group of dogs. The animals were sacrificed at various intervals (3 to 21 days) after irradiation, and sections of the tibia were prepared for staining reactions to observe the healing process during radiation. Observations were made on control animals also. A delay in the proliferation of the cellular elements of skeletal tissue was observed in the irradiated animals compared with the controls. The differentiation of the skeletal tissue was delayed. On the 7th day a rapid rebuilding of the bone took place, but because of resorption there was only a small amount of bone callus formed. The use of small doses of ionizing radiation (1.0 to 2.5 r per day) in all cases resulted in an increase in the rate of bone regeneration. (TTT)
