Dogs irradiated at a dose of 300 r from a Cow source were shot with a small caliber pistol. The control dogs were not irradiated, but were shot and subsequentiy treated in the same way as the irradiated group. Operative intervention was carried out 4 to 10 hr after the shooting under aseptic conditions with the use of nitrous oxide and ether as anesthetics. Protein concentrates, glucose, blood transfusion, vitamins, and antibiotics were used freely. but over one-half of the irradiated and nonirradiated animals died in the first few days due to loss of blood and traumatic shock. The present methods of treating firearm wounds (especially the administration of a protein solution to moderate the effects of shock) were as effective for irradiated animals as for anials that were not radiated. Slow healing of the woundd, lack of tonus of the intestine, and peritonitis were observed in the irradiated animals. Changes in the blood picture such as the occurrence of leukopenia, lymphopenia, neutrophilia, and a shift to the left were observed after the animal was well on the way to recovery from the operation.
