The activities of Italy in the field of food irradiation are described. The radiation sources used are $sup 60$Co gamma sources. Chemical changes due to irradiation were studied in potatoes, fruits, fish, meat and meat products, and animal feeds. Radiation effects on microbial content of fish, egg products and fruits were also investigated. A study was made of the suitability of potatoes, irradiated or treated chemically, for chip production. Wholesomeness studies of irradiated diet were performed in mice. (MG)
