BLASTOMATOGENIC EFFECTS OF THOROTRAST IN AN EXPERIMENTALLY-PRODUCED CHRONIC RADIATION SICKNESS

S>Research was done on 245 rabbits, of which 210 were subjected to a whole-body multiple low dose roentgen irradiation. Both in irradiated and control animals the object of the study was lymphatic system, involving the use of intravital lymphography. Thorotrast was introduced into soft tissues of the foot. In animals suffering from chronic radiation sickness, considerable changes developed at the site of the thoroplast injection. In 16 rabbits foot necrosis was recorded, in six others indurations appeared (thorotrast-granulomas), and in eight- malignant neoplasms (fibrosarcomas). No tumors were found in control animals. It was concluded that the whole-body external irradiation resulting in the development of chronic irradiation sickness tends to intensify the local biological thoroplast effect and, especially, its blastomatogenic action.
