ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE SPECTROGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF LITHIUM, POTASSIUM, AND BARIUM IN URANIUM ORES AND CONCENTRATES BY THE CARRIER DISTILLATION METHOD

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4131577
The ore or concentrate after ignition is diluted with spectrographically pure U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ and mixed with 7% by weight of sodium chloride carrier. The mixture is placed in a graphite cup which is made the anode for excitation in a d-c arc at 12 amp. Spectra are recorded photographically using a large spectrograph with either glass or quartz optics. Direct emission from the electrodes is avoided by use of an electrode screen. Spectra are evaluated visually or by microphotometer. The method is suitable for the determination of Li from 0.1 ppm upwards, Ba from 1 ppm upwards, and K from 10 ppm upwards, with respect to uranium in the appropriate dilution of the sample. Limits of detection with respect to sample are dependent on the total impurity content of the ore or concentrate. The precision is expected to be of the order of plus or minus 50% (3 x sigma) within the ranges. (auth)
