A neutron activation analysis method was devised for the rapid determination of ytterbium in aqueous solutions and in thulium oxide powder. Sample and standard were irradiated separately with neutrons at a flux of 3 x 10/ sup 11/ neutrons per cm/sup 2//sec for 6 sec, and then the rate of decay of produced gamma ray activities of 0.104-Mev with the half life of 6 sec was determined by use of a sodium iodide crystal attached to a 256-channel pulse height analyzer. A calibration curve for 0.01 approximates 1 mg ytterbium was prepared. By this method 0.064% ytterbium in aqueous solution was determined within 5% errors. (auth)
