FAST-NEUTRON CAPTURE CROSS SECTION VALUES OF COPPER AND ZIRCONIUM (in Russian)

The instantaneous gamma -emission method was used for determining the dependence of the radiative capture cross section on the energy of the fast neutrons for the case of natural isotopic mixtures of Cu and Zr. The T(p,n)He/ sup 3/ reaction was used as the neutron source, with a neutron energy scatter of plus or minus 16 kev; a CaF/sub 2/ scintillation counter was used as the gamma detector. The capture cross section curve was obtained by comparing the data with the fission cross section of U/sup 235/. The experimental error is estimated at 10% for Cu and 30% for Zr. The absolute cross section values for Cu agree well with the values reported by J. Gibbons et al. (Phys. Rev. 122: 182 (1961)); on the other hand, the corresponding Zr values were found to differ from Gibbons's data. At neutron energies below 200 kev, the average distance between levels is comparable with the energy resolution of the method. The fact that sufficiently thick, 2-cm samples were used for the measurements resulted in a lowering of the capture cross section, due to resonance blocking by scattering. (TTT)
