The distribution of microquanties of zirconium between hydrous nitric acid solutions and extraction agent (0.736 P solution of TBP in saturated hydrocarbons) was studied at 23, 40, and 70 deg C. The distribution of zirconium was also determined in the above systems when uranyl nitrate was present at 20 and 70 deg C. During nitric acid extraction the distribution coefficient of zirconium increases with increased temperature and nitric acid concentration. The apparent zirconium distribution coefficients were canalculated. The activity constants of zirconium in aqueous solution were evaluated. An increase of nitric acid concentration first depresses, then increases, the activity factor. Small uranyl admixtures to aqueous solutions (10 to 20 g/ liter) reduce zironium distribution coefficients; this reduction is due to the disociation of uranyl and the diminishing activity factor in the organic phase. The aparent zirconium distribution coefficients in the presence of uranyl nitrate were calculated. An increase in ionic strength first reduces and then increases the constants.
