Patent ·
OSTI ID:4130047
A process for producing low-silica zirconia grain or powder directly from zircon or other zirconia ores is described. A mixture of a silica- containing zirconium ore, carbon, and an oxide or oxide-forming compound of an alkaline earth metal, including magnesium, is heated to at least 4500 deg F in an arc furnace in the presence of nitrogen to dissociate the zirconium silicate present, to vaporize substantially all of the silica present in the mixture, and to form a fused pig of the complex, reduced zirconium product. This product is subjected to oxidizing conditions while at a temperature of at least 1500 deg F to oxidize the zirconium cyanonitride present and to cause the product to disintegrate into a granular material.
