A STUDY OF STRONTIUM, BARIUM, AND CALCIUM RELATIONSHIPS IN SOILS AND VEGETATION. Final Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4129883
Strontium, Ba, and Ca relations in soils andd vegetation were studied at three locations in New Jersey. A spectrochemical procedure was developed for direct powder analysis of soils using a d-c arc excitation in an Ar--O/sub 2/ atmosphere. Foliar analysis was by the NaNO/sub 3/ buffer method, andd certain trace elements were determined by a concentration procedure. A statistical analysis, element by element bssis, was made of the A andd B horizon of the respective soils. The elements compared were: Sr, Ba, Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Al, Si, Fe, Cu, andd Ti. Statistical comparisons, element by element basis, were made of the foliar analysis for Sr, Ba, Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Al, and Cu. Cadmium, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ga, Sn, V, Co, Ni, andd Ti were also determined for most species. Soils were fractionated according to size, the separates were identified, and a composition analysis was made on the separates as well as the total soil. Analyses included organdic matter, pH, mechandical analysis, separation andd identification of the heavy and light minerals, clay size minerals, and the soil extracts. Element comparisons of the foliar analyses showed a high degree of species specificity. Distribution of Sr, Ba, and Ca, in the soils studied, wss only slightly influenced by pedogenic factors. No strong geochemical distribution relation was noted between Sr, Ba, and Ca. The Ca: Ba ratio and Ba: Sr ratio were more closely related among the three soils than the Ca: Sr ratio. The data indicate that sampling from three sites within a location is adequate for statistical comparisons of soil and foliar analysis. (auth)
