Plasma was produced by passing a Mischarge through a quantz capillary tube containing neon at about 1-mm Hg pressure. The profiles of the lines N III lambda 2590, Ne II lambda 3713, and Ne I lambda 6096 were examined. These three lines show quadratic Stark effect. The profiles of lambda 2590 and lambda 3713 lines were found to be nearly symmetrical, so the effect of the ionic and electron fields was assumed to be negligible, nannely the broadening was assumed to be due solely to Doppler effect. The line lambda 6096 was found to be unsymmetrically broadened, being degraded more strongly to the longer wave- length side. This was interpreted to be due to the ionic field effect (Holtsmark type), as well as the electron effect, (Lorentz type), and the Doppler effect. The profiles studied were time-integrated. From the profiles of the lines the meand plasma temperatures of 1.0 x 10/sup 5/, 9.3 x 10/sup 4/, and 3.6 x 10/sup 4/ deg K were deduced. At the same time the time-resolved output of the photomultiplier wss studied, and the plasma temperature as a function of time was qualitatively derived. From Ne I lambda 5098 the mean electron density 7.7 x 10/ sup 15//cm/sup 3/ obtained. (auth)
