A falling film evaporator is proposed for treatment of radioactive waste solutions. A test apparatus was manufactured, and its decontamination capacity was studied using water and CMC aqueous solutions as Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, respectively, and LiCl as a tracer. When the liquid flow rates are 200 to 300 1/hr, and vapor mass velocities 100 to 1,000 kg/m/sup 2/hr, the decontamination factors are about 10/sup 5/ for the Newtonian fluid, which coincides well with the results previously obtained with a standard type evaporator, and about 10/sup 4/ for the non-Newtonian fluids. The mean retention time for the Newtonian fluid is about 0.26 sec, and that for the non-Newtonian fluid about 3.2 sec, when the liquid flow rate is about 200 1/hr. (P.C.H.)
